Individuals are able to submit one abstract for consideration in a maximum of two ACVP or ASVCP award categories with a choice of either an oral and/or poster presentation. As long as the criteria of the pertinent award categories are met, individuals will be eligible to win both awards for which they apply. The awards include, the ACVP Young Investigator Awards (poster), ASVCP Young Investigator Award (oral), the STP Student Travel Award (oral), ACVP/AAVLD Travel Award (oral), The Charles Capen Student Travel Award (oral), and the ACVP Veterinary Student Poster Awards.
Entries, as well as competition category, should be indicated on the abstract form. Please note that any additional award a competitor applies for may dictate the category of YIA that he/she is placed in (e.g., if a competitor requests to be entered in the ACVP/AAVLD Travel Award, they will be placed in the Diagnostic Pathology category, or if competing for the STP Award they will be placed in the Industrial and Toxicologic Pathology category). Thus, please ensure that your abstract is in the appropriate YIA category for the awards that you would like to compete for.
Competitors must:
ACVP Young Investigator Awards Poster Competition
ASVCP Young Investigator Award
ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award
Charles Capen Student Travel Award in Experimental Pathology
Society of Toxicologic Pathology Student Speaker Award
ACVP Veterinary Student Poster Award
Purpose
This ACVP awards program recognizes quality poster presentations by veterinary pathology residents and graduate students.
Eligibility
Individuals eligible for this competition must be veterinarians currently enrolled in a residency or graduate program in veterinary pathology or that have completed such a program after June 30, 2010. The poster must present original work of the competitor completed during the period of residency or graduate training.
Competitors are encouraged to be present at their poster display during the Focused Poster Session on Saturday evening, December 3 from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. during the Opening Reception; however this is not mandatory.
Award Categories
Each of these categories will offer up to three monetary awards:
If fewer than three abstracts are submitted within a specific category, the YIA category will be combined with the most compatible group. If there are more than three submissions but less than five submissions, one award will be given in the category. If there are greater than 5 participants in a category, three awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) will be given.
Judging
The posters will be judged by College Diplomates representing each focused scientific group, during the Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee on December 3-7, 2011.
Award Announcements
Awards will be announced at the ACVP Awards and Recognition Event, on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the Annual Meeting. Recipients are asked to display their winning poster on Wednesday morning from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon in the Young Investigator Award poster session.
* Undergraduate veterinary students still enrolled in a College of Veterinary Medicine are also encouraged to submit posters for the meeting, but they will be judged under a separate category and will be eligible for awards dedicated to veterinary student posters. One award will be given to the best oral presentation involving applied or translational research or case reviews that provide new knowledge in the field of veterinary clinical pathology. One award will be given to the best oral presentation involving basic research that provides new knowledge in the field of veterinary clinical pathology. The award category can be requested by the student, but final assignment of the category will be determined by the chair of Focused Scientific Group and the immediate Past President of the ASVCP. The student will be notified of the final category assignment prior to the meeting.
Judging
Award selection will be based on scientific content, abstract composition, clarity of presentation, and the ability to answer questions. Each resident or graduate student may submit only one presentation for this competition. Candidates awarded YIA the preceding year will not be eligible for an award in the subsequent year. The winner of each category will receive a $500 check from the ASVCP.
Three judges from the ASVCP membership will be identified by the immediate Past President of ASVCP. Judges will deliberate after the second ASVCP Clinical Pathology Focused Scientific Session and provide the names of the winners in each category to the immediate Past President.
Award Announcements
Awards will be announced at the beginning of the Case Review Session at the ASVCP/ACVP Annual Meeting by the immediate Past President or Executive Board designee. The immediate Past President or Executive Board designee will hand the check to the awardees and a photo session will follow. Winners will be notified that they should be present at this session to accept the award.
If you would like to be considered for this award, submit your abstract online at www.acvp.org by June 1, 2011.
Purpose
The American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) encourage trainees in veterinary pathology to participate in the Annual Meetings of both organizations. The fourth annual ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award is available to graduate students and/or residents in veterinary pathology for travel to and participation in the Annual Meeting of the AAVLD.
Eligibility
Candidates for the Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award must be veterinarians or other medical professionals currently enrolled in a full-time residency program and/or graduate program in veterinary pathology or a related discipline in the U.S. or Canada. Candidates who have completed a graduate and/or residency program in veterinary pathology within a year before the AAVLD meeting are eligible to compete.
Application and Selection Procedure
The presentation must represent original work of the applicant completed during his/her residency or graduate program.
Five or more oral presentations will be invited from abstracts submitted for the Young Investigator Award for the Diagnostic Pathology Focused Scientific Session at the ACVP Annual Meeting. Therefore, finalists for this award may be required to give both an oral and a poster presentation if competing for both the YIA and the ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Awards. The applicant should follow the guidelines for application for the Young Investigator Award in Diagnostic Pathology to be eligible for this award. On the website, an applicant can choose either poster (if also applying for YIA) or oral presentation and still be eligible for this award, but only the travel award finalists will be asked to do both poster and oral presentations.
Judging
The judging panel consisting of College Diplomates will select the best oral presentation by a trainee as well as a runner-up*. The presentation will be judged on originality and creativity, impact, organization, interpretation of findings and quality of the visual aids. The recipient will attend and present the same oral presentation at the next AAVLD Annual Meeting held September 29-October 5, 2011 in Buffalo, New York.
*If the selected candidate is unable to attend the next AAVLD Annual Meeting, then the runner-up will receive the award.
Award Announcement
The recipient of the award will be announced at the ACVP Awards and Recognition Event on Tuesday, December 6, 2011.
