Description of Externship:
The Johns Hopkins Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology offers an informal externship program in both pathology and laboratory animal medicine to veterinary students who have completed at least three (3) years of their veterinary training. The laboratory animal externship consists of hands on experience in our facility that has an average daily population of approximately 50,000 animals. The pathology externship consists of participation in the animal necropsy service for laboratory animals housed at the University as well as for cases from the Maryland Zoo, National Aquarium in Baltimore, and local practitioners. Externs work with ACVP and ACLAM board certified veterinarians, postdoctoral fellows and residents within the various specialties of our program.
The extern program is for a minimum of two (2) weeks, not to exceed eight (8) weeks. Because the program is adapted to the individual’s area of interest, only two students are accepted at a time. Scheduled times for externships are September through November and January through May. This is a non-paid externship.
To apply, please submit an application in the form of a letter stating your goals for pursuing an externship, area of interest, a current resume and two letters of professional recommendation to support your application.
Please mail application to Nancy Nath, Academic Program Coordinator, Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology, Johns Hopkins University, 733 N. Broadway, Suite 811, Baltimore, MD 21205-2196, or e-mail to nnath2@jhmi.edu.
